Why is your milk pasteurised?

We pasteurise our milk to make sure it’s food safe (by which we mean that it doesn’t make you unwell). Our milk comes from cows that are out in the open air by day and snug in stables by night. Our cows live in an open environment and bacteria are pretty happy in open environments. While we have a closed system to bring your milk from our cows to the carton, there is always a small risk of food infection.

We don’t want you to get food poisoning, so we pasteurise your milk.

Raw milk also has a very short shelf life. If you pasteurise milk, you can keep it for a few days longer. If you give it an Ultra Heat Treatment (UHT), you can keep for even longer. But it tastes very different and doesn’t have quite the same nutritional benefits as freshly pasteurised milk does.
